Protecting your on-line privacy is a hot issue at the moment. In recent weeks, we’ve seen the now infamous blunder by Google, revealing all of your email contacts automatically when signing up for Buzz. Late on Tuesday night, a crack in Facebook’s security meant that private email addresses of users were suddenly revealed publicly.

The site blamed an update to their code as being the cause for this blunder, but it’s estimated that confidential email addresses were exposed for at least half an hour. Facebook has made a statement on the popular social media site Mashable:

“Last night during Facebook’s regular code push, a bug caused hidden e-mail addresses to be visible briefly. The bug was detected within minutes and corrected.”

The fault was noticed by many users on Twitter before the fix was implemented.

The app lists Top, Recent and Upcoming stories in various categories, giving Digg users the ability to vote and view comments on stories. You can also share articles via Twitter, Facebook and e-mail.

Navigation through categories, articles and comments is quite elegant; after I’ve signed in, I’ve dugg and buried articles effortlessly within a minute. There’s also an option to save stories for later reading; it’s a handy option that lets you keep track of your favorite Digg stories on the iPhone.

A key to being productive is to try and schedule all the important tasks in the morning. Programming, writing, anything that’s essential should be done before one o’clock. Many studies have shown that human metabolism – a process that determines how ‘fresh’ you are – slows down considerably after this point. In the morning you have the best chance to complete your task faster and better. Schedule non-essential, repetitive or otherwise non-intellectually intensive tasks in the afternoon.

Using Google Calendar is great for productivity and is very easy with many advantages:

You’ve got it with you anywhere you go; it’s online and completely free unlike Outlook.

Expandable; you won’t run out of paper and ink.

Subscribe to other people’s calendars and share appointments.

Multiple viewing possibilities.

Syncs with Outlook and many other calendaring applications.

Export in the standard .ics format.

Reminders via SMS and email for free.

You can also use the Google Calendar Desktop Gadget: to manage your calendar without logging in using web interface.

Twittercal.com allows to manage your Google Calendar from Twitter. Just follow gcal and send it Tweets.

Unless you are a Firefox power user, you may not be familiar with the about:config settings. It’s a pretty powerful configuration settings page and not always as simple to use. In the about:config page, you have to know what you are doing or you can really screw things up.

To reach the page enter about:config in the address bar and press enter. There are entries in each line that handle various types of firefox configurations all entries are searchable. Before you start to reconfigure the settings keep in mind that if you mess up your configurations and firefox is fubar’d you can still fix it in two ways:

Make a backup of your prefs.js file before you start editing. Then if something goes wrong, you can restore it by copying it over the corrupt file.

You can also exit firefox and use the command firefox -safe-mode to bring up the firefox safe mode screen. Reset all user preferences to firefox defaults.

1. Speed up Firefox

This hack requires a few steps. Search for pipelining in the filter and you should see:

network.http.pipelining: Change this to true.
network.http.proxy.pipelining: Change this to true.
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests: Change this to 8.
Now search for max-connections and you should see:
network.http.max-connections: Change this to 96.
network.http.max-connections-per-server: Change this to 32.

2: Disable antivirus scanning

This is only for the Windows version. If you’re downloading large files, this scanning can seriously slow things down. Since you will most likely scan the downloaded file anyway, you’ll probably want to disable this.
To disable antivirus scanning, search for scanWhenDone and you should see:

browser.download.manager.scanWhenDone: Change this to false.

3: Open Javascript popups as tabs

If a popup window lacks the features of a browser window, Firefox will handle it like a popup. If you would prefer to open all windows, including popups, as new tabs, you need to tell Firefox in about:config. Search for newwindow and you will see three entries. Of those three entries, you will want to modify:

browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction: Change this to 0.

4: Spell checking in all fields

By default, Firefox checks spelling only in multiple-line text boxes. You can set it to check spelling in all text boxes. Search for spellcheckdefault and you should see:

layout.spellcheckDefault: Change this to 2.

5: Open search bar results in new tab

When you use the search bar, the results display in the current tab. This can be a nuisance because you will navigate out of the page you are currently in. To make sure Firefox always opens search results in a new tab, search for openintab and you should see:

browser.search.openintab: Change this to true.

Do you have other hacks that make Firefox more useful? If so, share them below.

Widgets have always been the marketing tool of choice for many software developers. They are very easy to package up and share with people because they are self contained and easy to implement. All the blogger or website owner has to do is paste the small snippet of code, and the widget is installed on their website.

Bloggers can use the same marketing approach to draw traffic to their own blog. You can create a widget for your blog (blidgets) that consists of little more than a short clip of code that’s very easy to share and distribute. Many other bloggers or webmasters are always looking for interesting and well designed widgets they can add to the side menu bars.

Creating widgets for your blog is fun, and best of all it’s free. You can create one for all of your blogs, or for any website that you like using Widgetbox. Once you have your widget created, share it!

After four years of waiting an improved version of quicken for mac has finally arrived! Quicken Essentials for Mac is a great tool for an easy overview of your financial life.

The first thing you’ll notice is the completely redesigned interface. Gone is the horrible toolbar navigation with multiple windows. Quicken Essentials has got that familiar streamlined iTunes/iLife look and feel with all your accounts, reports, budgets, and tools nicely displayed in a source list. Its single window interface makes it easy for the user to get a complete snapshot of all their finances. The interactive pie charts are snappy and responsive, and the built-in reports make it easy to view your checking, savings, and investing accounts.

If you’re like me and just want a simple program to view all your financial accounts, see where your money is going, and keep track of balances and upcoming bills, I highly recommend Quicken Essentials. If, however, you’re a Quicken power user who needs investing and planning tools, investment buy and sell tracking, TurboTax integration, or in-app bill pay, then QEM is not for you.
